In addition, nearly all UMTS phones (except Japan) are UMTS / GSM dual-mode devices, if a UMTS phone moves outside the coverage of UMTS during a call the call May transparent be transferred to the provision of GSM coverage. The roaming charges are generally significantly higher than the cost of regular use.

Most holders of UMTS licences consider ubiquitous, transparent global roaming an important issue. To ensure a high degree of interoperability, UMTS phones usually several different frequencies in addition to their GSM fallback. Different countries support different frequency bands UMTS - Europe first used 2100MHz while the USA used 1700MHz, and telephone and UMTS network must support a common frequency to work together. Because the frequencies used, the first UMTS phone models designated for USA may not be able to work elsewhere and vice-versa. There are now 11 different frequency combinations used in the world-including the frequencies used only for 2G services.

UMTS phones use a USIM (Universal Subscriber Identity Module) (based on GSM SIM) and also accept mobile phone SIM cards. It is a global standard for identification, and allows a network to identify the phone user to authenticate both local and roaming. The roaming agreements between networks to allow calls to a customer to be redirected to them while roaming and determine services (and prices) available to the user. In addition to the user subscriber information and authentication information, USIM provides storage space for reservations, contact telephone. Devices can store their data on their own memory or on USIM card (which is generally more limited in its repertoire details). A USIM can be moved to another GSM or UMTS phone and the phone on the user details of the USIM, meaning it is the USIM (no telephone), which determines the phone number of phone and billing for calls made from the phone.

Japan was the first country to adopt 3G technology, and the fact that they did not use GSM previously they did not need to build GSM compatibility in their equipment and their 3G handsets were lower than those available elsewhere. In 2002, NTT DoCoMo FOMA 3G network was the first W-CDMA network is the first incompatible with the UMTS standard for radio, but standard USIM cards, ie based on USIM card is possible roaming (transfer of USIM card in a GSM or UMTS phone when travelling). Both NTT and Softbank Mobile (which launched 3G in December 2002) are now using the UMTS standard, PDC and their 2G networks operate in parallel.

Edited and Rewritten from Source: http://en.wikipedia.org

The UMTS technology

Combine UMTS W-CDMA, TD-CDMA, TD-SCDMA interfaces, GSM's Mobile Application Part (MAP) core, GSM and the family of speech codecs. In the most popular mobile cellular variant of UMTS, W-CDMA is currently used. It is worth noting that other wireless standards use W-CDMA as their interface air, including FOMA.

On UMTS W-CDMA uses a pair of 5 MHz channels. However, competition CDMA2000 system uses one or more arbitrary 1.25 MHz in each direction of communication. UMTS and other W-CDMA systems are widely criticized for their broad spectrum of use, which delayed the deployment in the country which has acted relatively slowly in the allocation of new frequencies in particular for 3G services (such as the United States, Unis).

The bands originally defined by the UMTS standard are 1885-2025 MHz for mobile-to-basic (uplink) and 2110-2200 MHz for the core mobile (downlink). In the USA, 1710-1755 MHz and 2110-2155 MHz will be used instead, as the 1900 MHz band has already been used. [1] Although UMTS2100 is the most widely deployed UMTS band, some countries UMTS operators use the 850 MHz and / or 1900 MHz (independently, which means uplink and downlink are in the same band), including the United States United by AT & T Mobility, and in Australia by Telstra (850 MHz).

For GSM operators, it is simple but costly migration to UMTS: a large part of the infrastructure is shared with GSM, but the cost of obtaining new spectrum licenses and UMTS above towers existing is high.

A major difference of UMTS compared to GSM is the interface doing radio GSM / EDGE Radio Access Network (Geran). It can be connected to various commodities such as the Internet, ISDN, GSM or UMTS network. Geran includes three lower layers of the OSI model. The network layer (OSI 3) protocols form the protocol Radio resource management (RRM). They manage the bearer channels between mobile terminals and fixed network including transfers.

Edited and Rewritten from Source: http://en.wikipedia.org

Features UMTS

UMTS, using W-CDMA, supports up to 14.0 Mbps transfer rate of data in theory (HSDPA), although at the moment, network users can expect deployed a transfer rate of up to 384 kbit / s for R99 combined, and 7.2 Mbps for HSDPA devices as part down. It is much more than the 9.6 kbit / s of a single GSM error correction circuit channel multiple data or 9.6 kbit / s channels HSCSD (14.4 kbit / s for cdmaOne) and competition with other network technologies such as CDMA2000, PHS or WLAN-offers access to the World Wide Web and other data services on mobile devices.

Precursors to 3G are mobile 2G systems, such as GSM, IS-95, PDC, PHS and other 2G technology deployed in different countries. In the case of GSM, it is a path of evolution 2G, GPRS, also known as 2.5 G. GPRS supports a much better data rate (up to a theoretical maximum of 140.8 kbit / s, so typical rates are closer to 56 kbit / s) and packages rather than connection oriented (circuit). It is deployed in many places where GSM is used. E-GPRS or EDGE, is an evolution of GPRS and is based on more modern coding systems. With EDGE rate packet data can reach about 180 kbit / s (effective). EDGE systems are often referred to as "2.75G Systems".

Since 2006, UMTS networks in many countries have been or are being updated at high speed downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), sometimes known as 3.5G. Currently, HSDPA allows downlink transfer speeds up to 7.2 Mbit / s. Work is also progressing on improving the uplink transfer rate with the High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA). In the longer term, the 3GPP long-term development project plans to move to UMTS 4G speeds of 100 Mbps and 50 Mbps, using the next generation of air interface technology on the basis of Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing.

The first national consumer UMTS networks launched in 2002 with a heavy emphasis on telecommunications provided by mobile applications such as mobile TV and video call. The data speeds top of the UMTS are now most often used for Internet access: the experience in Japan and elsewhere has shown that user demand for video calls is not high, and phone provided by the audio / video has declined in popularity for the high-speed access to the World Wide Web - either directly on a device or connected to a computer via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, infrared or USB.

Edited and Rewritten from Source: http://en.wikipedia.org

About UMTS

Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) is one of the third generation (3G) cellular technology, which is also being developed in a 4G technology. Currently, the most common uses of UMTS W-CDMA as the underlying air. It is standardized by the 3GPP, and is the European response to the ITU IMT-2000 for 3G cellular radio.

To differentiate UMTS competition between network technologies, UMTS is sometimes marketed as 3GSM, focusing on the combination of the nature of 3G technology and GSM standard which it was designed to succeed.

This article deals with technology, business, usage and other aspects encompassing and surrounding UMTS, the 3G successor to GSM, which uses the W-CDMA air interface and GSM infrastructure. This transmission method differs from the method full-duplex capable to send the signal and accept at the same time in one time, or half-duplexes capable to send the signal and accept the signal even do not in one time. Transmission by simplex is happened in some communications technology, like telecast or radio broadcast.

Transmission Simplex is not used in network communications because nodes in network generally require the communications in two directions. Both technology do not compatible and have competition.

One of the reason why service 3G can give the throughput larger ones is because technological usage spectrum spread over conducive input data which transmission will disseminated in all frequency spectrum. Besides getting broad band larger ones, service base on the spectrum spread over much more peaceful than timeslot or frequency slot.

Network 3G not represent to upgrade from 2G; operator 2G which affiliate by 3GPP needing to change many components to be able to give the service 3G. Seems, technology GSM have grown on and very strong and heroic to be conquered.

In every operator GSM usually have the commissioned Optimization division to conduct the optimization of network GSM by arranging pattern of frequency re-use in network. Frequency Re-Use in GSM used to obviate the interference from two BTS with the same activity frequency. With the mechanism of frequency re-use hence interference can be avoided.

In technology GSM, service user which is in pursuance of conversation will be given the allocation 1 canal slot to conduct the conversation. This matter enable to we own the canal self moment is conversing without can be bothered by other consumer. But, thereby hence amount of available canal will be limited and cause the amount of conversation (user) capable to be served by BTS will amount to certain.

But that way, in GSM between consumers one other does not each other interference like in communications CDMA. Antenna BTS for the GSM OF and CDMA usually in form of length in it there are two function antenna as transmitter and receiver. Long from antenna depended from its frequency, ever greater frequency of dimension antenna smaller conversely (from principle of pattern antenna = 1/2 lambda). BTS Antenna in general there is two types: OMNI Antenna and PANEL antenna.
At antenna Microwave (MW) Radio, like drum, this is including type of high performance antenna. Usually there is 2 brand, that is Andrew and RFS. Individuality from this antenna high performance is for which is like drum, and there are its cover, so-called radome. Function Radome for example to protect the component antenna, from weather change.

2. Connection from BTS to that BSC usually use the MW radio, because usually only requiring 1x2MBps (E-1). While from BSC to MSC, usually use the Microwave with the big capacities, until 1xSTM-1, or use the connection FO (for the metropolis of).

3. Feeder Antenna have the mean diameter 1 ¼, Longley depended from situation antenna put down in tower, long progressively its feeder damping ever greater.

4. Existing peripheral in Shelter site: BTS, Microwave Indoor of unit and Rectifier system. Have to use the AC as a mean to take care of the temperature in room at optimum temperature (+ 20C) so that lifetime equipment will be awaked. Besides there are systems of security alarm, floods alarm, fire alarm, alarm infrared.

5. BTS is usually rationed by DC supply (- 48 V), what is yielded by Rectifier system. The battery to back up the system if playing dead PLN usually provides with this Rectifier System back up the time range from 2 - 4 hour depended from the design BTS.

6. Because BSC represent the “Controller" from BTS, become this BSC connect with a few BTS, so that " rather visible from outside" BSC site usually have the Antenna MW transmission which is more. Also bigger Site BSC usually, with the existence of peripheral Genset, TRS which is more and so on

7. Grounding BTS usually differed with the lightning rod. Especial functions to take care of the impedance remain to stabilize, preventing leakage of electrics spreads.

CDMA Transmission

In CDMA, technique of data transmission conducted differs from the transmission at GSM. CDMA use the more peaceful transmission technique, because in this technological history early its beginning used for military.

CDMA is true promise the data security if compared to an other technology like GSM, although we cannot say that the technology GSM is not peaceful. CDMA give the unique PIN code to every its user and only its user couple owning same key for the fox of code data accepted.

In general, process the data transmission in explainable technology CDMA as follows. Consignor, for example BTS (Base Transceiver Station) will arrange the signal before transmission pass the air media. Data beet at full speed lower (for example 9, 6 kbps) beforehand will be multiplied encoded PN owning high fast (for example 1, 2288 Mcps). With the multiplication process will be obtained spreading energy at wide frequency band (for example 1, 25 MHZ CDMA). Signal spread over this modulation will with the certain carrier RF for the transmission of to receiver.

Beside receiver, signals will demodulation beforehand by multiplying with the same carrier RF. Then signal will be disseminated by multiplying to return encoded PN which is the same as beside consignor. To get the data beet come from hence used a beet detector to cure the signal become the ordinary digital conversation.

Emulation GSM between 900 / 1800 and 1800

Converse the GSM technology is not exclusive about costlier expense compared to operator CDMA; we still can trace the emulation between operators which later become madness.

We can see the emulation between 3 biggest GSM operator in Indonesia which more and more the madness. Two big operator battle the price where as operator which is one do not want to follow the current and chosen the strategy by self. So draw to careful.

If seen from usage of frequency band and technological, hence there is again war to be happened, but in this case old operator very beneficial with the existence of frequency of dual band which they have the. Operator there is still be other which momentarily will attend to marketing with the have capital of frequency band DCS1800 for the GSM and frequency band 2100 to 3G technology. What him can success? We just see wait the growth forwards.

Careful proper here is with the usage just frequency band 1800, coverage area to every its site will become smaller in comparison with coverage of frequency area 900 used by operator existing. Its consequence, to cover the same area have to be provided much more amount site many compared to operator existing using frequency 900. Whew, that means to require the big capital.

Hopefully with many its telecommunications industry in Indonesia, expense of cheap conversation progressively and coverage progressively extend.

Nokia

A leading player in mobile communications in the Asia Pacific, Nokia first started operations in the region in the early 1980s. M. Ericsson) (NASDAQ: ERIC, OMX: ERIC B) is a leading Swedish-based provider of telecommunication and data communication systems, and related services covering a range of technologies, including handset technology platforms. Founded in 1876 as a telegraph equipment repair shop by Lars Magnus Ericsson, it was incorporated on August 18, 1918. Headquartered in Kista, Stockholm Municipality, since 2003, LM Ericsson is considered to be part of the so-called "Wireless Valley". Since the mid 1990s, Ericsson's extensive presence in Stockholm helped transform the capital into one of Europe's hubs of information technology (IT) research.

In the early 20th century, Ericsson dominated the world market for manual telephone exchanges but was late to introduce automatic equipment. The world's largest ever manual telephone exchange, serving 60,000 lines, was installed by Ericsson in Moscow in 1916. Throughout the 1990s, Ericsson has held a 35-40% market share of installed cellular telephone systems. Like most of the telecommunications industry, LM Ericsson suffered heavy losses after the telecommunications crash in the early years of the 2000s, and had to retrench tens of thousands of staff worldwide in an attempt to staunch the losses.

The handsets division got a fresh start in 2001 in the form of a joint venture with Sony called Sony Ericsson. LM Ericsson is a major provider of handsets and an infrastructure supplier for all major wireless technologies. It has played an important global role in modernizing existing copper lines to offer broadband services and has actively grown a new line of business in the professional services area.

On the 18th of February 2008, It was announced that Aastra Technologies would acquire the enterprise PBX division of Ericsson, This move has caused considerable consternation among Ericsson's partner companies.

Website : http://www.ericsson.com/id

Siemens

Siemens in Indonesia has been a reliable and competent partner for infrastructure development in the business areas of Power, Automation and Control, Medical, Transportation, Lighting, and Information and Communications for 150 years. AT&T was Lucent’s former parent company.

By creating Alcatel-Lucent we are bringing our common lineages back together and starting an exciting new chapter of our history -- creating the world’s first truly global communications solutions provider, with the most complete end-to-end portfolio of solutions and services in the industry.

Website : http://www.alcatel-lucent.com

ZTE

ZTE is a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions. In1980, the Government of Indonesia acquired all of the shares of Indosat, which then became a State-Owned Enterprise (SOE). In 1994, Indosat listed its shares on the Jakarta Stock Exchange, the Surabaya Stock Exchange and the New York Stock Exchange, achieving the distinction of being the first SOE to be listed overseas.
From 1969 until 1990, Indosat provided switched and non-switched international telecommunications services, including international direct dialling telephony, international data network communications, international leased lines and international television transmission services.
Entering the 21st century and in keeping with the global trends, the Government of Indonesia decided to deregulate the national telecommunications sector, opening it up to free market competition. From 2001, all cross-ownerships between Indosat and the domestic telecommunications provider, Telkom, have been eliminated, whereas the exclusivity rights of the two telecommunications service providers will be terminated in several stages.
Indosat pursued a main course of development of its cellular business starting in the mid 90’s. In 2001, we established PT Indosat Multi Media Mobile (IM3), followed by acquiring full control of PT Satelit Palapa Indonesia, thus making IndosatGroup the second largest cellular operator in Indonesia.
At the end of 2002, the Government of Indonesia undertook a 41.94% divestment of its shares in Indosat to Singapore Technologies Telemedia Pte. On that account this technology gives the adequate solution for the development of JARLOKAR (Local Network Access Radio) in area of suburban and also rural. But which important to remember the problem of limitation is quality of voice and frequency allocation.

There are some technology of cellular radio operating whereas this in the entire world. But nothing standard in the technology. These matters in the reality limit the system development of radio of itself cellular, especially which is concerning problem roaming.

Differ from the technology cordless, technological of cellular have the ability for the mobility of higher level and larger ones coverage. For example from cellular network shall be as follows:

• Analogue Cellular Radio
Among the system, system AMPS relative have the technological excellence, especially if evaluated from canal capacities conduct following accelerating its transmission. in this case mean that in system of AMPS of time of call development is shorter relative, something that it is of course very expected by operator STBS. Typical Network of AMPS.
In Indonesia this system have been made as STB National since year 1989, extending usage STBS in Indonesia, which is on its beginning apply the system NMT450 (STB-C).

• Cellular Radio
In growth STBS hereinafter, where make-up of efficiency of spectrum exploiting and quality of and also service type represent the very required matter, adjustment of technology digital cellular have come to the prima facie consideration.
Fundamental reasons from digital adjustment of technology in STBS for example:
a. Digital Signal relative more impenetrable compared to analogous signal
b. Peripheral tend to cheaper, along with its fast is digital technological growth
c. Make-Up of capacities, caused by economical digital modulation technique of spectrum
d. New Service type can be obtained, especially if integrated by ISDN
e. Better Security relative.
Big group of digital cellular radio system operating in the world for example NADC (North American Digital Cellular), GSM ( Global Sellular Mobile), DAMPS ( Digital AMPS), JDC (Japan Digital Cellular) and IS-95 (method access the CDMA).
In Indonesia systems which have been blazed the way its operation is GSM, this matter is relied on authentication of implementation GSM in Batam-Bintan as project STBSD.

• PCS/PCN ( Personal Communication System / personal Communication Network)
Technological this expands from society of communications wireless with the high mobility [is] which progressively expands its amount. PCS expand in United States while PCN in Europe. PCS / PCN can be interpreted as a new service form of telecommunications make a move the (Mobile Telecommunication) what more portable and pocketsize. What not owned by motion less radio telecommunications service (Fixed Radio Telecommunication). Technological this also enables integrated with the other communications network like to PSTN. If evaluated from its network hence recognizable PCS / PCN terrestrial and PCS / PCN satellite.

Technology Wireless Base On Cordless.

Evaluated from its application, technology wireless can be categorized to become two that is: technology wireless for the service of remain to, recognized with the term WLL (Wireless Local Loop) or is also referred as by JARLOKAR (Local Network Access the Radio) and technological of wireless for the service activities of communications make a move, what is in character limited to be referred as by cordless and also which is not limited, so-called mobile communication.

Technological growth of wireless, concerning some aspect, that is aspect from mechanism access the, aspect coding, aspect of security and aspect of capacities development for the service of broad band and also its standard aspect.

• Analogue of Cordless telephones CT0
Phone the cordless of this type of still hence analogous technology. Frequency 49 MHz and use the method access the FDMA. Communications which can be conducted by still one way.

• Analogue of Cordless telephones CT1
Phone this analogous cordless operate on the network PSTN. At its consignor unit operate on the band 1,642-1,782 MHZ (20 KHZ spacing) and for the unit of portable use the band 47,456-47,543 MHZ (12, 5 KHZ spacing). Maximum of power handset is 10 MW and have the energy reach around 200 m.

• Cordless telephones CT2
Beside Indonesia, many state using this technology CT2. In Indonesia more knowledgeable with the title telepoint. Amount of mean market less than 20 % compared to by customer of cellular and PCN. Technological this use the bandwidth 4 MHz from 864-868 MHZ ably handle traffic until 40 carriers, by carrier is spacing of each 100 KHz.
This System is very compatible used at area urban, suburban and also difficult area reached by cable network. But with the situation in Indonesia enable the technology CT2 only just outgoing call to limit this technology alternatively.

• Personal Handyphone System (PHS)
Come from the consumer state is Japan. Technological this serve the purpose of fixed and also low mobility applications able to support the voice service, data and ISDN with the beet rate 32 Kbps ADPCM.
Some concept which on the market by PHS at application WLL to include; cover the Home Cordless telephony, Public Service, and also wireless PABX as well as direct mode (handy talkie), can be jointed by PSTN and approach link can use the radio and also cable. Frequency band used is 1895-1918, 1 MHZ.

• Digital European Cordless Telephone (DECT)
Technical Standard follows the ETSI (European Technical Standards Institute). Now have operated in 32 state. Its Coverage area around 300 m for the Pico cell. But for the condition of special can be developed again. DECT earn the application at some usage for example: household, public, business and local loop applications.

• CT3
CT3 represent the digital system property developed by Ericsson.

Source of: http://www.angelfire.com

Telecommunications Technology

Telecommunications technology represent the technology which quickly expand, along with expanding it industry of electronics and computer.
